CHALLENGING TIME AT THE ISLAND
Mark Winterbottom and Steve Richards endured a challenging time behind the wheel of their Castrol-backed FPR Falcons during the Island 300, races 21 and 22 in the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship Series, at the Phillip Island in Victoria recently.

Coming off a superb victory on the streets of Surfers Paradise Winterbottom was aiming to continue his good form across the weekend but his strong run came to an early end in race two.

After securing his 12th top ten finish of the year in the opening 22-lap race on Saturday Winterbottom qualified on the front row for race 22 of the 2009 Series during Sunday morning?s 20-minute qualifying session.

Unfortunately for Winterbottom his run at the front of the pack would be short-lived due to an incident with Shane van Gisbergen at high-speed entering turn one on lap two. The pair made contact at 230 km/h and Winterbottom?s off track excursion resulted in an oil pressure issue on the Castrol-backed #5 Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon forcing him to come to a stop at the end of the lap.

While struggling to find a ?balance? in the set-up of the #6 Castrol FPR Falcon during qualifying on both days of the Island 300 Richards showed some strong race pace in the 22-lap and 44-lap encounters to claw his way up the order to finish 17th and 14th.

STRONG RUN FOR BEN BRAY IN THE WEST
Castrol Racing?s Ben Bray put in a strong showing in round three of the ANDRA Pro Series Top Doorslammer Championship in the 38th Annual Goldenstates event at the Perth Motorplex last weekend.

The second-generation racer qualified sixth in the 12-car field before going on to defeat the reigning National Champion John Zappia in the opening round courtesy of his better reaction time off the start line.

After a superb run in the opening round, which resulted in him earning the bonus points for the highest speed of the event, Bray went down to eventual winner Robin Judd in the second round of eliminations.

Victor Bray also qualified strongly in fourth spot but he went out in the first round after being defeated by Peter Kapiris.

ELIAS SIXTH IN SEASON FINALE
Toni Elias made his final appearance for the Castrol San Carlo Honda Gresini MotoGP team - at least for the immediate future - with a trademark charge to sixth place at Valencia, whilst his team-mate Alex de Angelis signed off with a creditable top ten.

Elias made a thunderous start from the third row of the grid to pass Valentino Rossi around the outside of the first turn and claim second place behind early leader Dani Pedrosa, battling tooth and nail for every inch of track over the next 30 laps but eventually conceding positions to the Italian, as well as Jorge Lorenzo, Colin Edwards and Nicky Hayden and finishing just 0.3 seconds behind the latter American.

The result was enough to seal a coveted seventh place in the championship that no fewer than six riders were in contention for on before the red lights went out, covered as they were by just seven points going into this final race.

Tenth place for De Angelis means he finishes the season just behind his team-mate in eighth overall.

RUNNER-UP FOR FORCE HOOD IN NHRA CHAMPIONSHIP
Another final round appearance by Castrol Racing?s Ashley Force in the season ending Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona secured her the runner-up spot in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

Force Hood finished second in the standings behind her Castrol-backed team-mate Robert Hight, who secured the crown by qualifying for the field on Saturday.

After qualifying her Castrol GTX Mustang in the top spot, Force Hood raced past Bob Bode, Del Worsham, and Ron Capps to reach the final, the 13th of her Funny Car career. However, it was Mike Neff who got the better of the battle in the final to claim his first career victory.

John Force qualified in second spot before going down to Neff in the second round of eliminations.
