It was a fabulous day for Castrol at the Sydney Telstra 500 with Mark Winterbottom taking a dominant win in the #5 Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon over Craig Lowndes and Shane van Gisbergen. The win guaranteed Winterbottom third in the V8 Supercars Championship and it well could have been an all Castrol, all blue podium with each of the Ford Performance Racing team prepared cars looking strong.
Nevertheless, within two laps, second placed Paul Dumbrell in his final fulltime V8 Supercar race spun and was collected by third placed Lee Holdsworth and then Will Davison lunged up the inside of Shane van Gisbergen and got onto the marbles and speared into the fence.
Earlier, Tony D?Alberto ? who led in the Wilson Security machine ? cannoned into the fence with broken steering.
Russell Ingall was the first Castrol runner behind Winterbottom, coming home in fifth placing ? a superb result and arguably his best of the year in his final race for the Paul Morris Motorsport team.
Greg Murphy brought the Pepsi Max Crew racer home just outside the top 10 in 11th, followed by team mates Rick Kelly (who was able to leapfrog Davison for sixth in the Championship) and David Reynolds.
Todd Kelly rounded out a difficult year for Jack Daniel?s Racing in 16th and was the final Castrol runner home.
Thus rounds out another enthralling V8 Supercars season, with the TeamVodafone pairing of Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes finishing atop the points chart ? the first time ever that a team has finished in the first two placings in the Championship.
The teams will head into the Christmas break now before unveiling their new colours at the opening test of the season at Sandown in February.
